MOGS - Dr. Shantabai Gulabchand Travelling Fellowship Award (2010-2011)

Being an ace ranker in her college, Dr. Shantabai Gulabchand secured an easy admission for MBBS in Grant Medical Collage of the J.J.Hospital. She passed the MBBS with flying colors, securing various medals to her credit, such as Viceroy’s siver trophy, Lord Sandhurst’s Gold Medal and even the National Scholarship for Indian lady doctors, She believed in studies in studies, and perused whole heartedly by completing her FRCS at an early age of 26 in London. After Obtaining this degree, she returned to Mumbai and started her own clinic in Girgaum. She possessed an entrepreneurial streak right from beginning of her career and started a company called” Altra Laboratories” that manufactured medicines. In June 1947 she married reputed industrialist seth Gulabchand Hirachand. She served as Director on the Board of Hindustan Construction Ltd for nearly 31years. Even in the post independence era, Shatabai was actively involved in polities and was associated with the Swatantra Party. She also deeply believed in women empowerment and education.

Histoy of the Dr. Shantabai Gulabchand

Mr. Ajit Gulabchand, chairman & Managing Director of HCC, has decided to constitute an award in the loving memory of his mother, late Dr. Shantabai Gulabchand, who was an eminent gynecologist practicing in our own city, for the advancement of specialized medical training to a young Obstetrician / Gynecologist, who is a member of MOGS. The award shall be for a minimum of three weeks and a maximum of four weeks training in any discipline of obst- Gyn in an overseas hospital or medical institute.

Eligibility Criteria for selection of the Candidate and Terms & Conditions for the Traveling Fellowship:

  1. Age of the desirous candidate shall not be more than 35 years, the candidate should be a Life member of the Society (or an ordinary Member for at least the last 5 continuous years); and should be holding a post graduate qualification (preferably a degree) in the subject of Obstetrics & Gynecology (or allied subject like Neonatology).
  2. The candidate must submit his / her application in five copies along with a curriculum vita, stressing on academic achievements, presentations of papers at conference and publications in journals.
  3. The applicant shall attach two References / Recommendations (one of them should be the Head of Institution / Department/ Unit if presently working in an institution).
  4. The candidate shall also state the Institution he desires to work at, the approximate period and the type of training involved, along with a provisional letter of acceptance by the Institution.
  5. The selected candidate will be paid an amount of not more than Rs. 1,00,000/- 75% of this amount will be paid before the educational trip, to include the expenses such as return economy class airfare, stay in a hostel / economy hotel and a stipend of not more than USD 500. the balance 25% will be paid upon return, after submitting the Fellowship Report and statement of Expenses. The Society will in turn forward a copy of the same to the Donors.
  6. The Award for the year 2010 -2011 will be presented at the MOGS Annual Conference on 5th December 2010.The last date for submitting the application is 30th October 2010.
